The StemTite Blast Control Plug is safe, fast and very easily applied
by a blast crew. A blast hole is charged in the usual way, with any of the
range of explosives used in a mine or quarry.
StemTite plugs are available in (13 ) thirteen standard diameters, to
suit blast hole sizes ranging from 76 mm to 311 mm.
- A length of not less than 1.5 times the diameter of the blast hole
is filled with stemming material. This amount is needed to protect the
plug from the heat generated by the blast. The StemTite plug is placed
on the end of an insertion tool, then positioned into the blast hole on
top of the stemming material buffer.
- When the StemTite plug has been positioned and before the insertion
tool is removed, a shovel full of stemming material is poured on top of
the plug to lock it in place.
- This allows the operator to remove the insertion tool easily, leaving
the StemTite plug properly located in the blast hole. The blast hole is
then filled with stemming material.
- After detonation, the blast drives the plug upwards. The plug is then
wedged firmly into the stemming material above, while expanding to fit
the hole. The result is a better confined blast, as more energy is directed
into the surrounding rock instead of through the blast hole.
*To achieve optimal blast efficiency, other parameters such as blast
design, drilling and blasting practices should be of an acceptable standard.
